S. Kathryn is a wife, mom, business owner, church member, and an advocate for fostering and adopting DC children. She has been an active resident for nearly 30 years. She moved to DC in 1989 after law school to start a new chapter of her life. She stayed, and she and her husband Maurice raised their three children here, because Washingtonians embraced them and inspired them to be engaged neighbors and contributors to DC communities.

S. Kathryn has worked in the Federal Government at the E.P.A.; in DC Government, as the first African American female banking commissioner; as an entrepreneur, and as a volunteer on local nonprofit boards. She is the founder/co-founder of two DC-based businesses, Gladsyl Insurance, and Answer Title and Escrow. She has served in community service roles with organizations including the Foster and Adoptive Parents Advocacy Center, Pastoral Council at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, CentroNia, the DC Board of Zoning Adjustment and Industrial Bank of Washington. She is also an alumna of Smith College, and Boston College Law School. S. Kathryn is a tireless team builder, connector and bridge builder.

S. Kathryn believes her faith and her parents’ guidance have shaped her empathy for others, her work ethic, her integrity, and her desire to use her talents to contribute to her community and society. As the middle child with seven siblings, S. Kathryn has always been a resourceful organizer, collaborator and mediator. She takes seriously her role as a part of the village that nurtures, educates and protects all of our children to achieve their wildest dreams. Our elders inspire her to continuously strive for forward progress, to value and consider our neighbors, and to keep our most vulnerable members connected to our communities.

S. Kathryn is uniquely qualified to serve as an At-Large DC Councilmember because of her depth of experience and skills, as well as her belief that our local government should serve the local interests of its residents. She will represent DC residents with thoughtful solutions that take into consideration all sides of the issues, and all of the possible impacts. As a bridge builder and connector, S. Kathryn will work with constituents from all parts of the city to make sound decisions that positively impact and include all residents in the opportunities our booming economy offers.
